Hong Kong Asian Market Opens in Benton

Blog by Emma Pledger
A new supermarket has just launched for a soft opening in Benton and it’s bringing all the flavors from East Asia to the local community. Hong Kong Asian Market, a vision put together by two brothers, offers more than just groceries–it shares culture, purpose, and a personal passion. Zengxing Dong, one of the brilliant minds behind the market, helped to bring about a store that not only provides the most authentic Asian foods and ingredients but more importantly, reflects his love for his family, ambition, and selflessness.
After searching for different locations, Dong and his business partner settled on opening the Hong Kong Asian Market right in Bossier Parish when an opportunity came through for a market located in Benton.
The location for an Asian market in Bossier Parish also seemed to fill a need for the area as Dong explained, “Close to here, around here maybe there’s not a lot of Asian markets, so we opened it here…”
Dong says the Hong Kong Asian Market is more than just a local market, but rather a destination.
“Normally, people need to stop here,” he said. “A lot of people will come here from one hour away or from far away.”
While Dong’s main focus right now is to run the market and keep it in a profitable state, he also hopes to eventually bring his culinary background into the mix.
“Before, I opened a restaurant and I made the sushi and the hibachi,” he shared. “If I have the conditions, maybe I will open the restaurant right here and I will make the sushi and the hibachi like that.”
But first, Dong says his focus is on making sure the store is a success, as more items are stocked within the next couple of months.
“We don’t know how everything is with this store yet. If right here is okay, and maybe I have more time and more manpower, then maybe I will do the restaurant.”
Dong is no stranger to running and owning a business, as he also owns a restaurant in a neighboring city, Lafayette, where he makes sushi and hibachi. However, the distance from his family weighs on him heavily.
“My wife and my kids are still in Lafayette. So sometimes I only see my wife and my kids once a week or every two weeks…,” he said.
Dong’s resilience in ensuring the business is a success originates from his family and his hopes to bring them to Bossier, where they’ll settle down. Though the time apart is difficult, Dong puts the work in every day so that his family may be together again.
It was Dong’s eldest son who was his biggest inspiration for this entire venture.
“I opened a supermarket because of my eldest son, who has autism.”
Dong expresses his deep love for his son, saying, “I hope my eldest son can make progress in many aspects of life,” and it’s because of him that Dong decided to open the market.
“I thought maybe if I did the supermarket, then maybe when he grows up, he could work here.”
Dong’s dream is to build something sustainable for his son’s future.
By opening Hong Kong Asian Supermarket, Zengxing Dong has done more than start a business—he’s laid the foundation for a long-term vision rooted in love, legacy, and community. As the store grows, Dong hopes it will not only support his son’s future but also serve as a welcoming space for people from all backgrounds to connect. His efforts are helping to build a bridge between cultures, right here in Bossier Parish.
