Spending a Day in Haughton: Here Are Some of Our Fave Places to Visit

Bossier Parish has towns and areas with a lot to offer both visitors and locals, including the warm, community-focused lifestyle in Haughton.
Haughton is a small but growing town in Bossier Parish, just east of Bossier City. Known for its friendly, close-knit atmosphere and way of life that blends rural charm with suburban convenience, Haughton is the kind of place where neighbors know each other and local pride runs deep.
“What I love most about Haughton is the sense of community — people here know their neighbors, support local businesses, and look out for one another,” said Javier Ochoa, owner of restaurant H Latin. “It’s welcoming and family-oriented, and that aligns perfectly with how we want our restaurant to feel — a place where everyone belongs.”
But there are some special experiences to be had here, which is why Be Bossier is offering up an itinerary that mixes outdoor exploration, unique eats, and quiet rural charm that is heavy on local features and family-friendly.
“I chose Haughton as the place to open my business because it has that small-town charm but is also growing quickly. It felt like the perfect place to share something new and different with a community that appreciates both tradition and fresh experiences,” said Ochoa. “From day one, we’ve felt welcomed and supported as our guests often tell us they’re excited to have something unique and flavorful in the area.”
For visitors, Haughton offers a mix of outdoor beauty, local flavor, and small-town experiences such as outdoor escapes to enjoy a peaceful walk and watch the wildlife, local history and architecture, unique flavors from local eateries, and fun for the whole family.
Enjoy this itinerary crafted for you by Be Bossier:
Morning Stroll at Bayou Bodcau Dam and Reservoir
This scenic reservoir and wildlife management area, just east of Haughton, is a peaceful natural escape for the region. You can walk or hike the nature trails, spot numerous bird species, including eagles in the winter, fish for a variety of types of catches, or even have a light breakfast picnic. Going earlier in the day means you might see more active wildlife before the temps get too high and they retreat to the surrounding foliage.
Visit Oakland Plantation
This blast from the past is a preserved 19th-century plantation south of Haughton, known for its architecture and ties to Louisiana’s past. Some visitors mention ghost stories connected to the property. You can take the time to walk the grounds and admire antebellum-style architecture while learn about plantation history and its ties to local culture. Be sure to check visiting hours before going, as interior tour times vary.
Lunch at Crawfish Palace
This casual seafood spot is known across northwest Louisiana for its crawfish boils and big platters with Cajun flair and a screened-in porch. Crawfish boils complete with corn and potatoes are a Louisiana tradition, and Crawfish Palace keeps that spirit by offering a backyard feel complete with other menu options such as fried catfish, shrimp, and oysters. Note that it can get busy, so arrive on the early side of lunch to beat the rush, and crawfish is market price, so ask before ordering.
Unwind in Joe Delaney Memorial Park
This community park is perfect for families with ample space to play catch, take a walk, and/or let the kids loose on the playground. Walking paths and shaded areas offer a nice place to let lunch settle and get some energy out before continuing your day. The park is a beautiful tribute to its namesake — Joe Delaney, a Haughton native and NFL player who tragically lost his life saving children from drowning. The park serves as a great way to serve the community and remember this local hero.
Take a Trip Around Mahaffey Farms
This family-owned sustainable farm is known for grass-fed beef, pasture-raised pork, and fresh seasonal produce. Mahaffey Farms stocks its own store with meats, eggs, honey, and veggies for future meals, while offering the chance to see live farm animals up close and learn about how farming can be sustainable. Since it is a working farm, opening times may vary, so check their website/social media for hours.
End the Day with Dinner at H Latin
This is a unique food spot offering a mix of authentic Latin flavors with a modern twist, creating an experience that feels both familiar and fresh. Beyond the food, H Latin focuses heavily on atmosphere and hospitality — making sure people feel at home, whether they’re coming in for a quick lunch, a celebration, or just to unwind with friends.
“It’s not just a meal, it’s an experience,” said Ochoa. “H Latin is the community’s restaurant. We’re here to serve, celebrate, and grow with Haughton. Our goal is to always listen, give back, and make sure you feel the warmth of good food, good service, and good company.”
While this agenda is a great way to slow down, relax, and get back in touch with your family and yourself, it’s just a start. Haughton blends outdoor charm with Southern hospitality, offering small-town living with big-city conveniences just a short drive away. Its unique flair and history always leave something to explore.
