Junie B. Jones The Musical presented by Stage Center’s SOPA

June 9-11, East Bank Theatre
Stage Center opens its summer production season with Junie B. Jones The Musical. First grade could not be more exciting for one young person. Journey through Junie B. Jones’s first day in first grade as a lot of things have already changed for this little diva. She gains and loses friends and has trouble seeing the chalkboard. Each of the 35-member cast is made up of Stage Center’s School of Performing Arts.

American Veterans Traveling Tribute Wall

June 9-13, Margaritaville Resort Casino
Margaritaville hosts a special display for the brave men and women who fought to keep this country safe. The traveling wall is the largest traveling replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. Each day, the casino will have volunteers available to assist those searching for names. Trace paper for copying the etched names will also be available. The casino will also have an opening ceremony beginning at 11 a.m. June 9. A free meal for veterans will be provided at Margaritaville’s World Tour Buffet following the ceremony.

Twin City Knockers vs. Acadiana Roller Girls

June 10, Bossier Civic Center
Doors open at 6 p.m. for the Twin City Knockers to host the Acadiana Roller Girls. The bout begins at 7 p.m. as the first whistle blows. The team is the first flat track roller derby team in the Shreveport-Bossier City area. This sport is jam-packed with excitement and each of the players have special nicknames. If you’ve never been to a roller derby bout, this is a good time to root for your home team.

Barksdale Leadership Forum

June 14, Hilton Garden Inn/Homewood Suites
Learn all about the Barksdale Air Force Base and get insight into the daily operations for Air Force Global Strike Command, 8

Purchased Lives: The American Slave Trade from 1808-65

June 1-July 17, Bossier Parish Library Historical Center
Purchased Lives is traveling panel exhibition by the Historic New Orleans Collection in collaboration with the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities. Three events are featured in June.

  • Chained to the Land: Book Talk starts at 2 p.m. June 3 and features Lynette Tanner. Tanner, the co-owner of Frogmore Plantation, will present her book, which focuses on the Works Progress Administration slave narratives from Louisiana.
  • The Underground Railroad in Northwest Louisiana starts at 2 p.m. June 10. Hear anthropologist and author Rolonda Teal discuss her work related to Los Adaes State Historic Site in Natchitoches and El Camino Real, part of the National Underground Network to Freedom program. Also, storyteller Thelma Harrison of the Company Repertory Theatre’s Theatre Eclectic will perform a piece based on her research of Harriet Tubman.
  • The Africa Roots of Louisiana Creole Cooking and Culture starts at 1 p.m. June 17. Panderina Soumas, author of Soumas Heritage Creole Cookbook, will discuss Louisiana’s Creole culture and its African roots and the history of slavery. She will discuss food prepared during slavery and show photos and information about her Creole family’s history. Plus, the audience will get to sample a food item.

The Transformations Group

Through June 31, Bossier Arts Council
The Transformation Group are unique emerging artists from a variety of backgrounds. Each of these artists have been learning from local photographer Jennifer Robinson through a Fine Art Photography class offered at Bossier Parish Community College. The artists have common values and are committed to becoming professional photographers. Open reception is 6 to 8 p.m. June 16. Featured photographers in the Transformations Group are: Anthony Davis, Charles Corbett, Brandie Ferguson, Tiffani Hall, Shamari Jackson, Lori Lambert, Elizabeth McCulley, Lana Rosalee, Zachary Storie, Stacey Tinsley and David Lounsbury.
