Back to School Ready: Tips From a Bossier Parish Educator

As the new school year kicks off in Bossier Parish, it’s time to trade in pool days for pencils and prepare for a fresh start in the classroom. Whether you’re a parent, student, or fellow educator, navigating the transition from summer break to school routines can feel overwhelming.
But don’t worry, Kedra Wilson, a Bossier Parish educator serving Bossier Parish students for over a decade, has you covered with tips and tricks to help make a smooth transition from summer to school mode. These back-to-school tips are sure to help make this season smoother, more organized, and even a little fun. From setting up smart routines to easing first-day jitters, these practical ideas are designed to help everyone get off to a successful start in the year ahead.
Tip 1: Reset the Routine After Summer Break
“One of the biggest challenges after a long summer break is getting back into a structured routine,” said Wilson.
Although it can be a challenge, it doesn’t have to be stressful!
“Start by slowly adjusting your bedtime and wake-up time at least a week before the first day of school. Practicing the shift in your sleep and wake-up schedule each day helps your body readjust to earlier mornings,” Wilson said.
This small change can make those first few days feel significantly less hectic and smoother.
In the mornings, consistency is key. Establish a routine that includes time for getting dressed, eating breakfast, brushing teeth, and grabbing everything needed for the day, without rushing out the door.
“In my home, we utilize timers to keep us on track in the mornings. It has become like a game for us in the morning, but most importantly, the timers keep us on track,” she said.
Don’t forget about the evenings! Create a calming after-school routine that includes time for unpacking backpacks, completing homework, having dinner, and winding down with something fun. A predictable evening flow helps reduce stress and ensures kids are rested and ready for the next day.
“A healthy, relaxing evening routine is just as important as a morning routine. Students work hard in school all day, having a calming, relaxing, and predictable routine can make for enjoyable evenings after a long day of learning,” said Wilson. Not only will consistent routines help students, but they also help parents.
Tip 2: Organize School Supplies and Encourage an Academic Mindset
Preparing before the hectic days ahead is crucial. Use checklists to ensure you have all essentials for a successful school year and get your brain back in gear to learn.
