Discover Summer Fun at the Bossier Parish Library

Summer is the perfect time for families to explore new activities, discover great books, and stay connected with their community. Bossier Parish Libraries offers all of that and more through a variety of free programs, resources, and events designed for all ages.

Seven Branches, One Community-Focused Mission

The Bossier Parish Library System includes seven branches located throughout the parish, each serving the unique needs of its community. While every branch offers access to books, technology, and programs, each location tailors its activities and services to the families and residents it serves.

Community Outreach Manager Joy Creasong said, “Each branch is unique because each caters to their community because we’re very community-oriented and focused.”

One of the system’s standout locations is the Central Library, the newest branch in the parish. Its modern design includes dedicated spaces for children and teens, along with a Makerspace featuring 3D printers, sewing machines, embroidery machines, and even audio and video editing studios. Best of all, these resources are available to the community at no cost.

Free Summer Programs for All Ages

One of the library system’s biggest draws during the summer is its wide variety of free activities. While many programs are geared toward school-age children, there are opportunities for adults and families to participate as well.

“We want to have a safe place for them to come to and be able to still learn, but also have fun in a safe place,” Creasong said.

Throughout the summer, Bossier Parish libraries host special performers, hands-on activities, movie nights, crafts, and even visits from petting zoos. These experiences give families the chance to enjoy activities that might otherwise come with a cost, helping bridge gaps and create memorable experiences for children during school breaks.

“Most events are drop-in programs, making participation easy and convenient. However, some activities, such as paint nights and specialty workshops, may require registration to ensure enough supplies are available for participants,” Creasong said.

More Than Books: Valuable Library Resources

For those who have not visited a library recently, you may be surprised by everything a library card can provide.

“Getting a Bossier Parish Library card is simple, and the library has worked to remove barriers that might prevent people from accessing services.”

Cardholders also receive free printing benefits and access to a variety of resources available throughout the library system.

The library also supports military families and participates in a regional consortium that allows residents from neighboring library systems to obtain a Bossier Parish Library card. This makes resources accessible to even more people across Northwest Louisiana.

Partnering With Schools and Serving Families

The library’s partnership with Bossier Parish Schools is another way it serves local families beyond its walls.

“The majority of our residents either work for Bossier Schools or have children in school,” Creasong said.

“It’s really important for us to make those connections and provide these resources for kids and teachers when they’re not in school.”

According to Creasong, the library strives to fill gaps that can occur during the summer break by providing safe, welcoming spaces where children can learn, explore, and stay engaged. Sometimes that support is as simple as offering a comfortable, air-conditioned place for families to gather.

“It’s not just about coming to the library,” Creasong explained. “It’s also the library coming to you.”

The library’s outreach efforts extend beyond its buildings as well. Through community outreach programs, staff members visit schools, daycares, summer camps, and other youth programs to bring library activities directly to children throughout the parish.

Summer Reading and Upcoming Events

The Summer Reading Program continues to be one of the library’s most popular initiatives. Participants who meet their reading goals earn raffle tickets for prize drawings. The prizes are open to all ages, making the program fun for both children and adults.

“Families can also find movie nights, bingo events, craft programs, and branch-specific activities throughout the summer.”

The library’s website features a color-coded calendar that makes it easy to browse events by location and quickly find programs happening near you.
